Stoneham timeline
1864
William Hone Stoneham founds the firm at Deptford Creek as a woodturning business in the basement of the family’s Reginald Square home. Using freshly imported timber arriving in London’s docks, Stoneham makes rungs for ladders, mangle rollers, staircase balustrades and table legs, as well as turning hubs for wheel barrows.
1927
Stoneham continues to move with the times and, following the acquisition of new premises the previous year, accounts show further growth as the company’s transport is upgraded. The company invests in one gas engine for £143 and two company bicycles are purchased at £3 and £6 respectively.
1939
Stoneham produces tables and its first kitchen cabinets, but World War II causes disruption to production. Restrictions on furniture making finds Stoneham contributing to the war effort; production turns to gas rattles, field hospital operating beds, ammunition boxes and streamlined balsa wood nose cones for De Havilland Mosquito fighter-bombers.
1944
E.G. Stoneham Junior manages the Stoneham factory at this time, but the continued war effort and severe austerity measures mean production focuses on essential works products for the war effort and utility furniture. With much of the country’s young men fighting at the front, a mainly female workforce drives Stoneham.
1951
Post-war, Stoneham makes framed and freestanding kitchen units. In 1957 the company introduces the Cambridge unit, a freestanding kitchen unit, selling in its thousands. By 1959 the price is just over £20. At this time the company moves to Sidcup, where the manufacturing plant remains to this day
1962
E.G. Stoneham, known as “boy”, becomes MD. Having worked for five years as an apprentice, from age sixteen, on the shop floor and completing his National Service (RAF) he returns to study sales and business. By the late 1960s Stoneham is manufacturing fitted kitchens in addition to the freestanding units
1978
Stoneham begins selling through kitchen centres. It appears in Texas Homecare, the first shed-style layout DIY home store. As the Texas Homecare chain grows, demanding more ‘levies’ for advertising and marketing, Stoneham pulls out. Not wishing to be seen as a discount furniture store, Stoneham opts to work as an independent specialist retailer.
1995
After three years’ continuous work for the Royal Family, Stoneham Kitchens is granted the Royal Warrant, in recognition of the company’s ‘credibility, dependability and honesty’. Howard Stoneham, Sales Director, is Royal Warrant Guarantor. The company also acquires a new 20,000ft² Assembly Plant factory in Sidcup and becomes Stoneham plc.
2007
During the 2000s kitchen design begins to centre on individual tastes, which results in a rise in the number of requests for bespoke kitchens. In 2007 Stoneham expands further and acquires a new finishing plant in Sidcup, adding 18,000ft² to the existing 20,000ft² plus an assembly plant factory, totaling 65,000ft² of premises.
2013
Stoneham Kitchens attends an event exclusively for Royal Warrant holders in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace, part of the celebrations for the 60th Anniversary of The Queens’ Coronation. All in attendance at this prestigious event are suppliers to the Households of HM The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.
