The brief
The owners of this detached property in Hertford, a working couple with two young daughters, wanted a durable kitchen design perfect for busy family life. Not only did it need to be functional, but it also needed to possess a wow factor inspired by New York loft living. Plenty of surface space for both cooking and dining was another necessity as they are both keen cooks who love entertaining.
The solution
The clients approached Stoneham retailer, Dobsons, to make the vision for their new kitchen a reality. Thunder Grey was paired perfectly with our Edwardian range, creating a chic look for the main cabinetry. The dark hues are contrasted with the natural tones of horizontal light oak from our Ambience collection which is used on some of the lower cabinetry and on the kitchen island to help create the rawness of loft style living. The oak also matches the wood of the industrial style dining table and main doors in the room. Sensio LED lighting strips complement the natural wood with a warm glow to create a pleasant, welcoming feel. The cabinets are built around the sink area which features an eye-catching mirrored splashback, which reflects the lights and adds to the room’s urban appearance.
Opposite the main cabinetry is a centrepiece island with light oak drawers topped with a ‘waterfall edge’ Silestone worktop in Aluminium Nube. This seamlessly runs horizontal to vertical to create a modern, urban feel while the silvery Silestone adds another texture and colour to the kitchen. It also provides the expansive surface space the owners desired. The position of the island within this open plan space allows them to overlook the entire room and keep an eye on their children while preparing meals or talking to friends.
The kitchen island is also home to a couple of innovative features. These include a stainless steel Caple wine cabinet with ample space for a number of bottles, and the addition of a bar drawer underneath perfect for entertaining. Above the island is a unique bespoke bulkhead with an extractor fan that sits flush on the surface and is positioned directly above the Neff hob on the island. The owner’s choice of pendant lighting was also incorporated onto the bulkhead to hang over the island.
A key aspect of the kitchen is the large larder which occupies one corner of the room. This provides plenty of storage space for condiments and other kitchen essentials such as the owners’ kettle and air fryer. It is finished with bi-fold doors that fold neatly on either side of the unit.
Given the owners’ love of cooking and hosting dinner parties, it was essential they had a broad selection of modern appliances. Neff was the preferred brand, supplying two ovens, two fridges, a freezer and a dishwasher, all of which were built into the kitchen units to provide a smooth, sleek finish.
