Pink cottage kitchen with a unique layout

Buckstead East Sussex

The brief:
A couple from Buckstead in East Sussex were looking for a new kitchen for their charming cottage. With the property’s quirky layout and limited space presenting some design challenges, they wanted a kitchen that felt light and elegant whilst working naturally with the room’s unusual angles.

The new kitchen also needed to connect seamlessly with the adjoining living space, complementing the high-end finishes found throughout the home. At the same time, the design had to respect the character and age of the property, including its original vaulted oak beam feature.

The solution:
With a challenging layout to work around, the couple chose Kraus Interiors to create a kitchen that would make the most of the available space and meet their design requirements. The layout was divided into three distinct areas: the main kitchen for cooking and preparation; a central zone for appliances and storage; and a third area combining kitchen and utility functions, complete with a compact breakfast bar.

 – Stoneham shaker cabinetry
Stoneham’s Edwardian range was chosen throughout the kitchen, with its classic framed Shaker doors lending an elegant, timeless quality to the scheme. Finished in Peignoir Pink, a soft warm pink with subtle grey undertones, the cabinetry introduces a hint of colour without compromising on the light in the room.

 – Natural stone worktop and breakfast bar
In keeping with the light colour palette, a natural stone Taj Mahal Quartzite worktop was installed across all three areas. Its warm, creamy-white base with soft beige veining, created a serene and luxury finish that works beautifully with the pink cabinetry.

In the utility area, the worktop extends to create a compact breakfast bar, positioned in front of a window overlooking the garden. It provides the perfect spot for the couple to enjoy a coffee or a relaxed breakfast while taking in the view.

 – Fine details
To enhance the character of the cabinetry, traditional solid cornice moulding was incorporated above the units, creating a decorative framed effect. Aged brass Villeroy & Boch taps and handles add warmth and an elegant finishing touch to the design.

 – Premium appliances
Miele appliances were chosen throughout the kitchen in keeping with the high-quality finishes found throughout the property. A sleek induction hob was installed in the main kitchen area, helping to maintain a clean and uncluttered look.

Where the room’s wall becomes angular, the cabinetry was carefully designed to follow the shape of the space while incorporating double ovens. Other large appliances are concealed behind cabinet doors, creating a streamlined finish throughout the room.

 – Radiant lighting
Warm LED strips were placed under the cabinetry to brighten key cooking areas while enhancing the detail of the exquisite worktop. The couple also chose aged brass wall sconce lights with white dome shades for the utility area. By avoiding additional lighting around the vaulted oak beam feature, the original architectural detail remains the focal point, allowing the character of the property to shine through.

The result:
The soft pink cabinetry, warm Taj Mahal Quartzite and aged brass details create a light, elegant kitchen that feels both timeless and contemporary, whilst delivering the luxurious space the couple desired. Cleverly designed to work with the cottage’s unusual angles and limited space, the finished kitchen provides a practical, cohesive space that complements the adjoining living area whilst preserving the character and charm of the original property.
