Modern farmhouse kitchen with oak pantry cupboard

Jersey

The brief:
The owners of a traditional farmhouse in Jersey embarked on a renovation project to modernise their property. With the kitchen being a pivotal space in their home, they sought a design that complemented the age and charm of the farmhouse. The layout needed to accommodate their passion for cooking and entertaining so therefore needed to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal.

The solution:
The homeowners visited Stoneham retailer Somerville where they selected Stoneham’s Penshurst range for the kitchen furniture. The modern, shaker doors add a subtle touch of character to the room to complement the style of property. A white-grey shade (Cashmere) was chosen for the main cabinets and a deep bold blue (Blue Hague) for the island to make it a focal point in the kitchen.

The extensive island has plenty of space for the owners to prepare and cook food. It is equipped with a vented hob, a secondary prep sink and a slim drink cooler perfect for nights of entertaining. A raised circular table was also installed at one end of the island creating the ideal spot for informal dining and relaxed coffee breaks. A Staron worktop in a dark grey (Tempest Caviar) shade was chosen for the dining table to contrast with the Staron worktop in white (Morning Sky) on the island and the rest of the kitchen.

To address storage needs, a bespoke freestanding spice pantry was installed with oak shelves, engraved ‘treat’ drawers and built-in spice racks to ensure a well organised space for all the owners culinary essentials. Oak accents were also added to the kitchen design in the form of custom wine racks built at the ends of one run of cabinets, as well as pull-out oak tray platters and chopping boards located between the lower cabinets. The use of wood breaks up the neutral colour palette while adding a subtle nod to the rustic feel of the farmhouse. Another noteworthy storage space is a discreet hot drinks station which houses the homeowner’s coffee machine, kettle and accessories for making hot beverages. This is easily accessed via bi-fold doors that tuck neatly to one side.

To complete the room, a Belfast style sink makes the perfect accompaniment for the modern farmhouse kitchen. LED lighting under the countertops add a warm ambiance to the room while cup and ball handles enhance the furniture’s elegance.

Since completion the kitchen has won an award with Siemens, part of the BSH Home Appliances Group in the category ‘studioLine Design Competition for Quarter 4 2023’ for its stunning design.
