The brief:
A family of five moved to a 17th-century farmhouse in Jersey that required extensive renovation, including the kitchen. One of the homeowners has a passion for interior design, so was keen to imprint her own sense of style on the space.
The brief was to create a modern country kitchen that would complement the age and character of the property, while also functioning as a sociable hub for family life and entertaining. Key requirements included integrated bench seating and a bespoke media unit to conceal the television.
The solution:
Stoneham retailer Somerville was chosen by the couple to design a kitchen that met their practical needs, while working sympathetically with an existing yellow Aga and the property’s 400-year-old chimney breast. Somerville also worked in collaboration with the owner’s interior design team, Onyx Door Interiors, to refine details and ensure the couple’s vision was realised.
For the cabinetry, Stoneham’s Penshurst range was selected for its classic in-frame detailing and contemporary finish, and painted in Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin, a soft white with a subtle beige undertone.
While white dominates the main runs, a greige oak was introduced on the island and bench seating, adding warmth and textural contrast, while maintaining a calm, neutral palette.
The island occupies a central position in the kitchen, offering generous storage and an expansive Staron veined work surface in Cotton White. Integrated seamlessly within the island are a Siemens oven and wine cooler, alongside the homeowners’ most important request – a curved bench seat. Padded cushions create an inviting, cosy nook, thoughtfully oriented to face the bespoke media unit that conceals the family’s television.
The bespoke media unit was crafted around the television, creating a striking focal point in the kitchen. Bi-fold pocket doors conceal the TV and are finished with vintage hand-silvered antique mirrors, introducing an ornate, decorative detail. The mirrors reflect the room and the owners’ colourful artwork, enhancing the space with light and character. On either side of the mirrored doors, exposed wooden shelves provide space for the family to display personal items.
The mirror finish is also seen on a pantry cupboard that stands next to a large Sub Zero fridge freezer. The pantry includes a spice rack on the doors, shelving and engraved drawers, providing a personalised touch for the family.
The finest details were accounted for to complete this grand space. This includes Armac Martin brass shelf brackets and solid brass handles that adorn the cabinetry. The wooden shelves are positioned near to the sink with wall lights nestled between them to illuminate the area and add a feeling of warmth.
Other details include black and white veined fluted tiles that form an eye-catching backdrop to the yellow Aga. The owners’ bold, colourful artwork can also be seen around the room, with glimpses of yellow that perfectly tie in with the Aga.
The result:
The completed kitchen combines classic in-frame cabinetry, warm natural textures and carefully chosen finishes that work seamlessly alongside contemporary elements, creating a space that feels both timeless and current.
Features such as the bench seating and bespoke media unit allow the kitchen to function as a true sociable hub, while personalised touches reflect the homeowners’ sense of style.
The result is a calm yet characterful kitchen that blends craftsmanship, comfort and functionality, while honouring the heritage of the 17th-century farmhouse.
