Minimalist kitchen with statement walk-in pantry

The brief

Having helped their parents throughout the installation of their Stoneham Kitchen, the owners of this large, detached house in Birmingham were impressed by the quality and wanted an equally stunning design for their own home. Not only did it have to be beautiful, but also functional for all aspects of life, whether it be dining, socialising, working or relaxing.

The solution

The clients approached Stoneham retailer Culina + Balneo to help turn their vision into reality. They utilised our Penshurst Painted range for its classic, minimalist style, while a number of bespoke elements were incorporated throughout the design. The main stretch of cupboards features cabinetry which extends from the ground to the ceiling and is painted entirely in the sophisticated tones of creamy white Mussel. This is beautifully complemented by the slightly darker tone of Sand Grey on the expansive kitchen island, featuring plenty of storage and several comfortable stools which also match the muted colour scheme. Cleverly placed LED under-surface lighting strips finish the look with a warm and welcoming glow.

One of the bespoke features the owners requested was a large walk-in pantry, but they didn’t want to keep it hidden when it wasn’t in use. Instead, they opted to make a feature of the walk-in pantry and chose not to have a door on the front, allowing their items to be on display. It was also crucial that this space flowed with the rest of the kitchen. This was achieved by replicating the style of the island, utilising the Sand Grey colour and incorporating the same tongue and groove panelling. The entrance to the walk-in pantry also provides access to a utility room which offers plenty of storage and keeps essentials neatly out of sight.

The opposite end of the room provides the multi-functional aspect the owners desired. A long sofa offers an additional space to socialise with friends and family, while the open-plan design makes it easy to continue chatting with anyone in the kitchen area.

Further functionality is created using a number of innovative pieces of technology. Several Miele appliances, including a fridge, freezer, dishwasher and extractor, as well as a large range cooker, ensure all the owners’ cooking requirements are met. The Shaws sink and Perrin & Rowe taps are situated on the central island opposite the cooker, allowing for easy movement between all the key appliances, further simplifying the meal-prep process. Aside from cooking, an S-box port socket located on the kitchen island ensures devices are kept powered and provides remote working capabilities should the owners need it. When not in use the socket can be cleverly concealed inside the worktop, maintaining a sleek, uncluttered look.

Covid-19 restrictions meant meetings with the clients had to be held over video to ensure all the bespoke elements were exactly as desired. Despite these challenges, they were left with a stunning finished product, matching the quality of their parents’ design which had acted as the inspiration for their own Stoneham kitchen.
