Minimalist kitchen with sculpted Marazzi stone-effect island

The brief:
A family of four in Highgate, London, sought a new kitchen and living area that would make a bold, distinctive statement within their home. Key requirements included a large centrepiece island, a spacious fridge freezer, and plenty of practical storage capable of accommodating heavy items. The clients were keen to create a contemporary space with a neutral colour palette throughout.

The solution:
Stoneham retailer K&I Kitchens was selected to deliver this unique project, working closely alongside the couple’s interior designer. For the main cabinetry, Stoneham’s Fusion range, with its smooth, seamless doors, provided the contemporary finish the clients desired. The cabinetry was painted in Farrow & Ball’s Skimming Stone, a soft grey-beige tone.

Within a run of tall Fusion doors are pocket doors that conceal a bespoke walnut pantry, complete with custom drawers, shelving, and worktop space to neatly organise tea and coffee items, helping to keep the kitchen free from everyday items.

Alongside the main units, a bi-fold, countertop dresser is set back into one corner. Designed with accessibility in mind, it incorporates a pull-out shelf for easy access to small appliances.

A single door, seamlessly integrated into the wall, conceals an elegant, recessed walnut pantry bar. Designed with a clean aesthetic, it provides enough space for storing glasses and bottles, as well as preparing drinks.

Beyond the storage lies the main focal point – the island. Carefully constructed using Stoneham cabinetry and specialist Blum fittings, the structure was designed to support Marazzi Silver Root, a stone-effect porcelain, which was clad around the entire form.

This process required a high level of precision and engineering to secure the heavy material and ensure the veining aligned seamlessly across all surfaces. The result is a striking, monolithic sculpture that takes pride of place within the room.

While the island delivers strong visual impact, it also functions as a highly practical workspace, housing the sink and Novy gas and induction hob to create dedicated zones for cooking and cleaning.

At one end, a breakfast bar provides seating for each family member, while nearby, an integrated 1810 champagne trough is set within the worktop, intended for chilling bottles as well as storing fresh herbs.

Another area requiring careful precision was the floating media unit installed within the living space. The substantial weight of the Xylo melamine surface meant that metal support rods had to be fixed securely to the wall, allowing the unit to slot into them and remain stable while achieving a floating effect.

A TV is centrally positioned within the unit, with artwork from the owners’ travels displayed on the box shelving above.

To complete this unique space, additional appliances include Miele ovens in Pearlbeige, which blend seamlessly with the overall colour scheme. A wine cooler is also integrated, along with a Liebherr Monolith side-by-side fridge and freezer featuring smart connectivity, as specified by the couple.

The result:
This kitchen delivers on the brief with its contemporary, minimalist style and dominant stone-effect island that is central to the design. The neutral palette, seamless finishes and bespoke features create a unified, highly functional space that has been purposively shaped by the family’s tastes.
