Cross in Hand

The brief

The clients of a detached Arts and Crafts house in the rural village of Cross in Hand desired a sociable kitchen that could be enjoyed by family and guests. It needed to link to the garden without compromising the cooking area and in keeping with the style and architecture of the property. This included incorporating the original chimney breast so that it looked inconspicuous in the new design.

The solution

The owners consulted with Stoneham retailer Metamorphosis Interiors who created a design that truly captured the brief. Stoneham’s Edwardian range in Cashmere, a light grey, was chosen for the main cabinetry. Its elegant in-frame doors provide character to the room while being sympathetic to the style of the house.

To add some contrast to light grey in the room, the use of oak was used to highlight specific detail. This included oak pull-out storage trays located between cabinets to break up the grey colour scheme. Oak is also used on one of key features in the room, the kitchen island. At one end of the island is an oak butcher’s block with a slatted oak open shelf rack below, ideal for the owners to display pots and pans or more decorative items. The island also has a breakfast bar to help create a more sociable dining experience. But what really makes the island the centrepiece of the kitchen is its colour, a bold burnt orange shade.

The burnt orange tone cleverly ties in with hints of auburn and copper that sweep through the Caesarstone worktop in Excava, as well as the flooring and the eye-catching copper pendant lights that hang above the island. The link of the burnt orange colour adds interest to the subtle palette of the kitchen.

Asides from the island, another focal point in the room that contributes to the social element that the clients requested is a bespoke bar unit at one end of the room. This was cleverly placed to allow plenty of space for movement around the kitchen. The bar includes a Liebherr wine cooler located in between two storage cupboards and worktop space ideal for drink preparation. There is also an impressive oak wine bottle storage holder recessed into the wall.

To complete the grey and orange kitchen the latest appliances were chosen including two Miele ovens, a Liebherr fridge/freezer, Bora hob with integrated extractor and a Quooker boiling water tap which allows the owners to serve up a brew in moments. Bi-fold doors were also installed to provide views of the garden and create a smooth connection between the kitchen and outdoors that the clients desired.
