The brief:
Nick and Sarah from Wedmore in Somerset had acquired land with an old barn which they were transforming into their dream home. The property, which they named “Harmony House” was to have an open plan living area which would include the kitchen. For this space the couple wanted a grand design that was out of the ordinary but would complement the rest of the property. The kitchen also needed to function well for Nick and Sarah when entertaining their family and friends.
The solution:
The pair discussed their project with Stoneham retailer Angel Interiors having been introduced by their building company BJ Campbell South West Ltd. The team at Angel Interiors decided to go bold, choosing Stoneham’s Cudham range painted in jet black for the main cabinets and espresso oak doors for the island. The use of rich, dark tones created a luxurious finish to the design.
The island includes a raised l-shaped breakfast bar in dark quartz to define the seating area. This is contrasted with Misterio quartz worktops with a waterfall end that showcases a beautiful veining detail. A Neff induction hob is also located on the island allowing the couple to cook, while their family watch and engage with each other at the breakfast bar.
As the room was such a large space and flowed into a dining and lounge area, Angel Interiors had to be mindful of not cluttering the kitchen, however because of the size of the room they were able to create some impressive features. This included a luxury bar unit framed with a gold inlay to highlight the design. The unit includes two tall pantry cupboards on either side, one for storing spices, other jars and glasses and small appliances such as a toaster. The other cupboard provides drawers for wine bottles, space for drink preparation and shelving. The bar also has pocket doors that neatly slide away when opened. In the centre of the unit is a cruciform wine rack, wine cooler and shelves with mirrored splashbacks and led strip lighting to illuminate this focal point in the room.
Another unique feature incorporated into the design is a secret passageway that allows access into a utility room through a tall door using the same black kitchen cabinets that feature throughout the kitchen.
To complement the rich tones, gold was cleverly added to create the grandeur Nick and Sarah wanted. This included a gold Quooker tap and brushed gold bar handles on the cabinetry. To ensure the kitchen’s exquisite design was maintained inside and out, walnut was used for the cabinet’s carcase and dovetail joints on drawers resulting in a kitchen that exudes elegance and luxury.
