Family kitchen with island and media wall

Eastbourne

The brief

The owners of a detached home in Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne were looking for a new kitchen that would bring the family together. They wanted a change from their classic wooden shaker kitchen with dark finishes to a lighter modern space with the latest appliances. But most importantly they wanted a kitchen that they could enjoy!

The solution

The family approached Stoneham retailer Metamorphosis Interiors to create their desired space.  For the furniture two ranges were chosen including Fahrenheit in Hickory Drift providing a wood grain effect and a subtle nod to the area’s harbour and boat mooring. In contrast, Fusion cabinets in Moles Taupe a light grey/brown shade was used for a smooth finish and to highlight key feature units in the room.

One of the main features is a media unit providing a dedicated area for the family’s TV. Open cabinets at the top allow the owners to showcase cookbooks and decorative ornaments, while on either side of the TV are two glass shelving cabinets displaying the family’s collection of glasses. At the bottom of the unit, wide internal bespoke drawers provide plenty of storage space for many items. To complete the design a stainless-steel plinth and trim create a stylish frame, while complementing stainless steel accents are used throughout the kitchen.

To bring the family together a large kitchen island was installed with a low-level breakfast bar recessed into the island. Neolith Barro Satin stone worktop in a soft brown shade is used for the breakfast bar while Caesarstone Organic White worktops are used for the remainder of the island and kitchen to brighten the space. The sheer size of the island worktop provides plenty of space for the Miele TwoInOne hob with integral countertop extractor which is flush to the surface adding to the modern design. It is also positioned so that the owner can cook while interacting with her family at the breakfast bar. The owner comments, “It is so great that we can all sit together and catch up after everyone’s busy day at work while I am cooking.”

For storage, the kitchen boasts both low- and high-level cabinets, as well as storage utilising the full height of the wall, including a dedicated cutlery drawer with dividers. Additionally, in one corner sits a tambour roller shutter that hides the family’s small appliances keeping the kitchen worktops clear of any clutter.

Miele was the preferred brand for the majority of appliances including three ovens, a warming drawer and dishwasher. The owners also opted for a Quooker Flex tap in chrome that provides boiling, chilled and sparkling water. LED lighting is used throughout the kitchen to highlight the cabinets and worktops making the room brighter for cooking and dining. And Elstead Harbour pendant lights hang over the central island’s breakfast bar to complete the overall look.

When asked for her feedback on the kitchen the owner said, “The kitchen has become a hub for the family and cooking has become a joy again with everything I could possibly need.”
