Contemporary kitchen with curved furniture and bespoke bar

The Brief

The family were embarking on an extensive renovation project and approached Stoneham retailer, Dobsons in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire for some help. Their kitchen was to be a key part of the renovation, entirely replacing their original walnut shaker with something more contemporary. Like most modern kitchens nowadays, it was essential that it was perfectly suited to the family’s everyday living requirements, both in terms of dining and relaxing. In addition to the immediate family, the space also had to be ideal for entertaining guests on a regular basis.

The Solution

Although they loved their previous kitchen, the family were excited to explore different design options. Keen on a varied palette of colours and textures, they opted for a mix of Anthracite Oak Stained and French Grey furniture from Stoneham’s Darwin and Holwood ranges. With the palette decided, there were some unique challenges to overcome next. Unsightly waste pipes dropping down from the first-floor bathroom had to be cleverly hidden using original columns fitted with sleek shelving for displaying ornaments. Another intuitive idea was the use of curved cupboards on the furniture under the widows to create space for doors on the return walls. With these more subtle details in place, attention could turn to making the best use of the large open-plan space.

The kitchen features a number of unique aspects. The centrepiece is the large island, incorporating both a prep sink at one end and a round seating area at the other, finished with a triple layer worktop of Sparkling White Corian. Both the island and other furniture feature stainless steel detailing with a stainless-steel plinth at the base to unify the scheme of the entire kitchen. Contrast to the bright whites is provided by the dark grey tones of both the tall cupboards and another standout feature of the kitchen – the large crescent shaped bench encasing an Anthracite Oak circular table. This bespoke piece of furniture is completed with signature purple dining stools which add a splash of colour. This gives the family plenty of seating for guest visits as well as providing the mixed palette they desired. Siemens appliances fitted throughout ensure that the kitchen is completely functional.

Aside from the kitchen itself, the family wanted an additional leisure space for themselves and friends. The room adjacent to the swimming pool already housed a snooker table, comfortable seating and a large TV for watching sport – all that was needed was a bar. Taking inspiration from an existing jukebox and Italian lounge furniture, a 1920’s style curved bar was designed. Similar to the style in the kitchen itself, Glacier White Corian provided the framing and work surfaces. This was complemented by the Stoneham Flow High Gloss cupboards in Classic White. Shelving, a drinks cooler, and stools for three lucky people completed the furniture, producing a final product any keen football fan would be proud of.

With the kitchen and sports room working in tandem, the family now has everything they were looking for, and more. The range of colours perfectly capture the mixed colour scheme they desired, without it being overcomplicated. Along with the kitchen’s impressive new appearance, the island table, crescent bench and bar area offer a range of seating spaces where the family can comfortably relax with friends.
