Contemporary brown kitchen with large island

The brief:
A couple had been living in their home for several years before deciding to extend the ground floor. The new space was designed to accommodate a contemporary kitchen that would complement the interiors throughout the rest of the property.

The brief was to create an open-plan kitchen that would work equally well for entertaining and relaxed family meals. While the kitchen needed to have a modern aesthetic, it was important that the space felt warm, welcoming and inviting.

The solution:
The couple approached Stoneham retailer RDO in Reigate to create a kitchen design that reflected the style of their home and delivered the look they had in mind. With a generous area to work with, RDO was able to design a space that delivered on every aspect of the brief and included an unexpected hidden extra.

 – Stoneham furniture
For the floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and furniture beneath the sink, Stoneham’s Ambience range was chosen for its minimalist door front. The oak cabinetry was painted in Dulux Country Boots, creating a warm, muted brown that complemented the natural grain detailing.

In contrast, Stoneham’s Infinity range in high gloss was chosen for the island in a soft Cashmere shade, introducing a contrasting texture and colour to the scheme while maintaining the warm, contemporary feel of the space.

 – Hidden kitchen door
A concealed door was cleverly integrated into the tall run of cabinetry, creating a discreet passageway into a pantry room. Behind the door, many of the couple’s appliances are concealed as well as additional storage, helping the main part of the kitchen keep a clean, seamless appearance. The hidden passageway adds an unexpected element to the design that is revealed only when the door is opened.

 – Large kitchen island and booth seating
A substantial island with integral L-shaped booth seating forms the centrepiece of the room. The island incorporates a sink and Bora induction hob, set into a Cosentino Sensa Taj Mahal quartz worktop. Its striking veining in warm beige and gold tones complements the earthy colour palette of the kitchen.

The upholstered booth, with its accompanying table supported by espresso oak cylinder legs, provides a comfortable and inviting space for dining and entertaining. Integrated lighting beneath the table highlights the warmth and natural character of the timber, adding to the welcoming feel in the room.

 – Bespoke wine bar and pantry cupboard
Entertaining is made easy with a bespoke wine bar integrated into the tall cabinetry. The bar features dedicated stemware holders, worktop space for drink preparation and a Dunavox wine cooler.

Alongside the wine bar, a bespoke breakfast pantry provides practical and stylish storage for everyday essentials. Racks fitted to the doors, personalised engraved drawers and shelves at varying heights make it easy to organise and access a range of breakfast items.

 – Practical features
A pop-up power socket integrated into the island and a dedicated charging drawer provide convenient access to power, while a stepped spice drawer keeps herbs and spices neatly organised. A tall larder drawer offers further accessible storage for everyday food items.

 – Fine details
The kitchen also features a second worktop – Planet Mars by Quartzforms. This dramatic deep-brown slab, with its striking veining, provides a rich contrast to the lighter worktop on the island.

Adding to the contemporary aesthetic, a handleless trim was used on some of the cabinetry, finished in a gold-effect finish to complement the heavy-gauge bar handles on the tall cabinetry. The coordinated detailing creates a subtle connection between the different elements of the design.

The result:
The minimalist doors, premium worktops and cleverly concealed storage give the kitchen its contemporary finish, while the earthy colour palette, warm lighting and upholstered booth seating bring softness and warmth to the space. Together, these elements create the practical and inviting setting for family meals and entertaining that the couple wanted, along with design details that make the most of the generous space.
