Coastal inspired kitchen with driftwood oak accents

Kenley

The brief:
The owners of a detached house in Kenley, Surrey had commissioned a bespoke orangery and wanted a new kitchen that would complement its design. The open-plan layout also meant the kitchen needed a natural flow into the orangery and dining area. As the owners had grown up in a coastal town, they were keen to channel this feeling into a modern style kitchen that incorporated plenty of storage. The design also had to work alongside the couple’s existing oak designer table and chairs.

The result:
The homeowners were existing customers of Stoneham retailer RDO Kitchen Studio having bought appliances from them in the past, so it was an easy decision to instruct RDO to design their new kitchen. They agreed on Stoneham’s Inscribe handleless range in dove grey for the main part of the kitchen. The light grey cabinets are paired beautifully with a Spekva white oil oak waterfall breakfast bar connected to one side of kitchen units.

For storage, the main kitchen includes a Le Mans corner unit, a convenient way for the owners to access many items, along with a drawer with steps to display spice bottles. In the dining area a bespoke pantry unit was crafted in Stoneham Knole in-frame range in driftwood oak and finished with grey mirror inserts to the doors. Inside are bespoke pull-out trays, drawers and shelving with space for the owner’s mixer and espresso machine – all of which are instantly lit with a radiant super slim light profile when the doors open. To complete the pantry a triple layer cornice with a dove grey centre frames the unit. This cornice is also replicated above the upper cabinets in the kitchen, but in contrast uses driftwood oak in the middle to tie in with the oak accents used across the open-plan areas.

The use of wood provides a nod to the driftwood found on beaches creating a connection to the couple’s seaside childhood town. This connection is also seen with collection of coastal inspired artwork that hangs throughout the kitchen and dining rooms.

To ensure a cohesive colour palette, a Dekton Neural worktop was installed. The light cream base has fine, pale veins that run through the marbling for a subtle and elegant finish that blends with the neutral tones used throughout the space.

To complete the coastal inspired kitchen and match the premium design, the owner’s wanted the very best in contemporary appliances. This included a Caple wine cooler, a Miele oven, hob and dishwasher, a Fisher and Paykel integrated American style fridge, Quooker Flex Tap and a Franke sink.
