Blue and pink kitchen with a touch of gold

The brief
As part of their ongoing home renovation project, the owners of this Victorian home in Newport, Wales wanted a new and bigger kitchen. The idea was to extend their existing galley kitchen into a square space big enough to host a large kitchen island that was to be the focal point in the room. The clients also wanted the kitchen to be practical as well as free flowing with views onto their garden. With a love of interiors and the colour pink, the owner was keen to incorporate the shade into the room to complement the pink décor seen throughout the house.
The solution
Having been to a cooking event at Stoneham retailer Gardiner Haskins, the couple immediately fell in love with a pink kitchen island on display in the showroom. This ultimately led to the couple instructing Gardiner Haskins to start work on the design of their new kitchen.
Stoneham’s Edwardian range was the perfect choice for the cabinetry in keeping with the style of property. The range’s traditional shaker doors were modernised in Blue Hague (dark blue) across cabinets that run along only one side of the kitchen, therefore creating more open space on the opposite side. For the island, Farrow & Ball’s shade Cinder Rose, a romantic dusty pink was used as desired by the clients. This delicate shade also provides contrast to the dark blue cabinets. All the furniture was topped off with White Storm Silestone worktops.
Taking centre stage in the room is the island, which not only stands as a beautiful piece of furniture, but also incorporates a number of practical elements including: a Belfast sink, Neff dishwasher, integrated recycling bins, shallow storage drawers and a Neff freezer. While this was too much to fit on one side, with the seating on the reverse, the freezer and drawers were integrated into the ends of the island allowing all the elements to be neatly slotted into place. Another practical addition is a pop-up plug socket that sits flush with the worktop (when not in use), which is already proving popular with the owners’ guests. To finish the island, a touch of gold detailing was added for extra luxe in the form of handles, stalls and a Quooker Fusion square tap providing instant boiling water, as well as filtered chilled and sparkling water.
For extra storage, a bespoke double door pantry spanning the full height of the room across the back wall provides the perfect space for the owners to organise their dry foods with crafted oak shelves, drawers and spice racks built onto the inside of the doors. The pantry also houses the microwave, kitchen scales and coffee machine freeing up space on the worktops for an uncluttered look. Another larder was built next to the pantry to balance the run of tall units.
Along the same back wall of cabinets is an impressive Rangemaster Nexus induction hob cooker nestled into the chimney area. Above which is a single shelf for the owners to display more of their favourite pink accessories to dress the room.
To complete the room, crittall-style doors were installed along one wall for views onto the couple’s newly renovated garden letting the natural light flood the kitchen. The white walls throughout the kitchen also provide a brighter space allowing the focus of the room – the pink island- to truly stand-out.
