Barn house kitchen and utility room

Bristol

The brief:
The owners of a beautiful, converted eighteenth-century barn needed a new kitchen to replace their existing one. As they had planned to remodel the space, this meant they would be able to have an open-plan kitchen with seating looking out onto their garden as well as a separate utility room.  The couple wanted the kitchen to complement the period of property and have bespoke cabinetry and clever storage to help create a streamlined look.

The solution:
The owners appointed Stoneham retailer Gardiner Haskins after a visit to their showroom and being impressed with the designs and solutions they offered. Having looked through different samples and colours, the couple opted for Stoneham’s Cudham range to suit the style of their barn house. For colours they chose a pale grey for the top cabinets and a dark grey for the lower doors and kitchen island. The same shades were also used in the utility room.

The island is one of the key features in the kitchen which has a breakfast bar, with seating for the couple and a Neff wine cooler to house bottles of wine and fizz. There is also plenty of worktop space for food preparation.

As part of their brief, the couple wanted to keep the kitchen looking clutter-free by concealing items that would usually be on display. To meet their requirements an impressive bar pantry was crafted with mirrored doors that bounce light into the room, and open to reveal a mirrored interior, complete with glass shelves, oak bottle storage and a drinks preparation area.

A breakfast and hot drinks unit with bi-fold doors was also installed to hide a coffee maker and toaster. Other storage solutions include integrated recycling bins, a corner carousel shelf and under-island cupboards to keep the floor and work surfaces clear. The kettle was also replaced with a Quooker Fusion boiling water tap to free up even more space. Additionally, a handy drawer with mobile phone charging points was included in the design to keep phones and wires out of sight.

The kitchen is finished with Carrara Misterio Quartz white-marble-effect work surfaces, stainless steel handles, a butlers sink to complement the style of property and a Falcon induction range.

As for the utility room, it features a tall cupboard with internal vacuum-cleaner charging points, as well as a storage bench unit to accommodate coats, shoes and boots and dog paraphernalia for their pet Spaniel.
