American inspired grey kitchen with office area

Elgin

The Brief

The client wanted to build a new home in Elgin inspired by upstate New York, particularly the Hamptons. After some unexpected issues which prevented the new build, the challenge was to transform their current home into their dream house. With the American inspiration in mind, the new kitchen had to work with contemporary furniture, but also ensure more classic design elements didn’t look out of place. Their love of cooking also meant the kitchen had to be functional and provide a perfect spot to regularly entertain between 10 and 12 guests.

The Solution

The couple approached Stoneham retailer, Kitchens International in Aberdeen, and designer Fiona Mercer was enlisted to make the kitchen dream a reality. Stoneham Strata Thunder Grey was chosen for the wall cabinetry.  The darker tones of the cabinets were complemented by the lighter Dove Grey tones on the kitchen island, perfectly making use of the open plan space. The island was completed with a 30mm Lagoon Silestone worktop, providing a smooth and elegant finish.  Given how busy this kitchen would be, a dark grey mirrored splashback was opted for, subtly hiding any fingerprints or cooking marks.

Contrast to the grey was provided by traditional style brickwork on the adjacent walls, perfectly capturing the client’s American inspiration. Plenty of natural light was provided by the large glass windows in the new extension created by demolishing an old conservatory and existing interior wall between the kitchen and dining room. Special cornice and curved panel details were created by Stoneham, further contributing to the luxurious overall finish.

The kitchen possesses a number of unique quirks, all with the idea of maximising space. A tidy office area was incorporated into one of the tall units. The filing system and pull-out tabletop perfectly match the kitchen’s overall design and can be tidily tucked away to maximise the kitchen space when the office isn’t in use. Further clever storage space is created using two slide-back units, while any appliances which are permanently plugged in can be kept behind doors, neatly hiding any messy looking wires. The slide-back units not only provide storage, but also offer increased countertop space to cater for all their cooking needs. The high loadbearing capacity of the strong stone worktops further make the kitchen an ideal space to cater for lots of guests.

To ensure that the family could get the most out of their kitchen, the units had to be specially made to accommodate the variety of appliances installed. These were supplied by Kitchens International and include a Sub Zero Wolf fridge, freezer, warming drawer and a Siemens extractor. To aid the client when she has family and friends over, two Siemens dishwashers were installed as well as a Quooker Fusion tap making washing up seem effortless.

As a result, the couple have a vast open-plan kitchen, entirely practical for both their family life and hosting guests. The kitchen design combined with high quality contemporary furniture provides the wow factor they were looking for, leaving visitors in awe when they first witness it themselves.
