1950s American Diner style kitchen

Dorset

The brief:
Mr. & Mrs. Sellers, owners of an 1884 Victorian house had a vision for their kitchen, inspired by fond memories of a favourite 1950s-style diner in Texas, USA. With the rest of the house also undergoing extensive refurbishment, the homeowners were to keen to create a setting which provided them with flexible space for cooking and entertaining their frequent house guests. The Sellers’ dream of a retro 1950s American Diner Kitchen was about to come true.

The solution:
The Sellers chose Country Image, a Stoneham Kitchen centre, close to their home in Dorset. The kitchen features gently curved cabinets in metallic silver, from Stoneham’s Fusion range and are complemented by the rounded edges of a Corian deep black quartz work surface. LED lights fitted underneath the worktops add subtle ambience and in a nod to the 1950s material of choice, metal finishes feature heavily throughout. Shunning conventional cabinet doors, stainless steel effect tambour roller shutters cover the wall cabinets and are trimmed with a blue and chrome strip. Metallic silver doors with opaque glass gently filter light through into the kitchen, whilst the overhead skylight provides a natural spotlight directly over the kitchen’s showpiece – the bespoke island.

This striking centrepiece provides the Sellers with the dynamic setting for their kitchen that they envisaged. The island’s expansive worktop and blue-vinyl seating creates a spacious and comfortable space for entertaining friends, as well as doubling up as an area for food-preparation. Truly bespoke, the island is made from Fusion high gloss in a custom-blend Tiffany Blue, topped with a polished concrete worktop and trimmed with a stainless steel rail, reminiscent of a classic 1950s diner counter. Integrated LED lights give a modern touch.

Details complete the aesthetic; curved 1950s style faucets, a copper plated whistle kettle and a wall-to-floor chalkboard which offers fun as well as practicality. The consistent use of reflective, smooth materials – polished quartz and concrete worktops surfaces, chrome trims and stainless steel features create a cohesive and stylish kitchen. Juxtaposed against the retro design, state-of-the-art modern appliances, including two dishwashers, from Sub-Zero, Wolf and Miele provide serious equipment for serious cooks.

Mrs. Sellers says, “We were very specific on what our new kitchen had to achieve and are absolutely delighted with the final result. It reflects our life and family, and we feel the polished concrete worktop is a real focal point. Our design was to create a flexible space for entertaining friends, family and clients. Not only is it a beautiful focal point of our home, but is extraordinarily functional for catering any gathering.  What we love more than anything is how easy it is to clean up – no matter the size of the event! This came in very handy when just 24 hours after the kitchen opened, we had a party for 50 guests!”
