How to bring curves into the kitchen

There are many ways you can incorporate curves into the kitchen, from architectural features and curved cabinetry to shaped booth seating. Introducing softer lines with curves can help create a more welcoming atmosphere, while enhancing the sense of flow throughout the room.

Adrian Stoneham, Managing Director at Stoneham Kitchens shares his advice on how to bring curves into your kitchen design.

Introduce an arch
Arches have seen a resurgence in popularity in interior design and can be used to incorporate shelving, highlight artwork, or create a separation between rooms. In kitchen design, arches can be crafted to frame areas such as the hob or sink, drawing attention to these key kitchen zones. Not only can an arch help define a particular feature, but it can also introduce a striking architectural element that enhances the overall character of the space.

Create gentle curves with a booth
Booth seating is a great way to introduce curves into your kitchen design. Booths work particularly well at the end of a kitchen island, paired with a circular dining table to create a cosy and sociable dining space. A curved booth softens the island design and improves the flow around the room. Additionally, you can layer cushions and include upholstered finishes to enhance the sense of comfort and make the area feel warm and inviting.

Add a curved breakfast bar
If you’re incorporating a breakfast bar into your kitchen island, consider a curved design. This can be achieved as a continuation of the worktop or by introducing a contrasting material, such as coloured glass or timber.

Like a curved booth, a shaped breakfast bar softens the end of an island and enhances the overall flow in the room.  It also creates a sociable seating area, allowing guests and family members to face and interact with those preparing and cooking food.

Consider curved kitchen cabinets and drawers
Curved kitchen cabinets and drawers are an effective way to soften the look of a kitchen and reduce the prominence of angular corners. Rounded edges can improve the flow of the space, making it easier to move around, especially when your kitchen is busy with family or guests.

Whether incorporated into an island, base units or feature storage, bespoke curved cabinets can enhance functionality while introducing a sense of elegance and craftsmanship.

Add a curved peninsula
Just as a kitchen island can be shaped with curves, a peninsula provides the perfect opportunity to introduce softer lines where your worktop ends. Curving the outer edge helps reduce angular edges in the room, creating a more fluid and welcoming design. This approach is particularly ergonomic, improving ease of movement around the kitchen and making the space feel more open.
