A bantry combines two popular kitchen features: a pantry and a bar. This growing kitchen trend is finding its way into homes thanks to its dual functionality, giving homeowners a stylish, space-saving solution that combines storage with an entertaining space.

Can a bantry be integrated into a small or large kitchen?
Both small and large kitchens can accommodate a bantry. In compact kitchens, a bantry works best when integrated into a tall run of cabinetry. This allows it to sit seamlessly within the overall design while maintaining a cohesive look without making the space feel cluttered.

For those with more space, a bantry can either be a standalone feature or be incorporated into your kitchen cabinetry.

Do you have any tips for designing a bantry?
When designing a bantry, it’s important to balance practicality with visual appeal. Pocket doors are a great option, as they slide neatly out of sight when open, freeing up floor space and allowing the interior to be fully appreciated while in use.

Careful planning of storage is key. Consider what you’ll be housing, from dry goods to glassware, and communicate this clearly with your kitchen designer so cabinetry can be tailored accordingly. Personalised detail, such as engraved drawer fronts for items like bread, pasta or treats, provides a practical solution and a sense of understated luxury.

Lighting is another essential element. Integrated LED strips, positioned vertically or horizontally, not only enhance visibility but also elevate the overall look, creating a warm, inviting feature within the kitchen.

What should a bantry include?
Generous storage is essential, with deep drawers perfect for organising pantry goods, alongside adjustable shelving to accommodate glassware of varying heights.

A dedicated worktop area is also key, providing space for bottles and drink preparation. You might even consider adding a small sink, which is ideal for washing glasses and mugs.

If you plan to incorporate small appliances, such as a coffee machine, it’s important to include integrated plug sockets to ensure a convenient power supply.

And as previously mentioned, good lighting is a must, helping your bantry perform practically and as a design-led feature.

Is there a size limit for a bantry?
We regularly design and build these units ranging from 600mm to 1200mm in width. These can be configured with either single or double doors and in a variety of heights to suit different spaces and needs.

Is the bantry a trend that will come and go?
The term “bantry” is still relatively new, and awareness is only just beginning to grow, so we expect it to become increasingly popular. Whether the name itself stands the test of time remains to be seen.
