How to brighten up your kitchen
A well-lit kitchen, not only means you can see well to prepare food, it also creates a more welcoming space you’ll enjoy spending time in. So, if your kitchen feels dark and is lacking in light then there are plenty of ways to brighten up your kitchen. Whether that’s making changes to your existing space or opting for a completely new kitchen, here are some considerations to help let in the light.
Update cabinets with glass fronts and mirrors
Using glass is a great way to add light into a room. Break up solid fronted cabinets with fluted glazing to add interest to the design or clear glass to show inside your cabinets. Mirrored doors are also a great way to reflect the light in the room and make it feel more spacious, while providing a decorative addition to your kitchen design.
Get the light, right!
Choosing the right lighting is really important and the size of the room will influence the brightness and intensity. Ensure you have lighting installed at different levels to provide light where you need it most, such as by food preparation areas and above dining tables and islands. LED lighting under cabinets is perfect for shining a spotlight on worktops while plinth lighting can really help brighten up for your floor.
Add a splash of colour
While choosing natural tones are an obvious choice to make your room lighter, that doesn’t mean you should stay away from dark shades. If you do go for a bolder colour choice then add pops of colour with a fridge/freezer, smaller items and even art. This will help draw attention to the brighter features in your room.
Use reflective materials
Anything shiny will help bounce the light which is why metallic materials work wonders. This is easy to introduce through the use of stainless steel as the finish for your taps, handles, fridge/freezer and even a bin. You could also use brass, bronze or copper. We’ve already mentioned mirrors on cabinets, but using a mirror as a splashback is a great way to reflect the light and create the illusion of a bigger space.
Invest in building work
If you don’t already have doors leading onto your garden, you might want to consider opening up one wall and adding large bi-fold doors. You could also get a well-placed skylight installed in your roof. By doing this you can guarantee the natural light will flood through your room.
