Retailer Spotlight: Kitchensmiths turns 30

Cambridge based Kitchensmiths has been offering Stoneham Kitchens for 18 years, and this year is particularly special as the company celebrates turning 30. We had the pleasure of speaking to Managing Director, Martin Smith to find out more about their history and how they plan to celebrate their 30th year of trading.

Can you tell us how Kitchensmiths started and your journey over the past 30 years?
Thirty years ago, myself and Tony Smith (no relation!) set up the company along with our wives who helped with the administration. The name Kitchensmiths seemed an obvious choice and Tony’s son designed our then ‘From Start To Finish’ logo which was our USP at the time. It was a tough time in the early 90’s but we had great kitchen design and installation experience from working in other companies.  Word soon got out and our previous customers started to follow us.

In 2003, soon after moving to our current large premises in Histon in Cambridge, Tony sadly died  leaving my wife Debra and I to take up the mantle. It was important to us to retain the family, service-driven ethos that we were known for. We were fortunate to have a great team around us, both designers and installers and everyone worked hard to make Kitchensmiths a success.

Since then we have gone from strength to strength keeping the showroom bang on trend, and ensuring our customers are always happy.

Can you explain how you became a Stoneham retailer?
Back in 2004 I was invited to the Millbrook Testing Centre which was hosting a Neff appliance launch.  Stoneham had been used for the furniture backdrops to show off the appliances, and fortunately this coincided with us starting to look for a new more traditional kitchen supplier to complement our German offering.  I loved the quality straight away, so it wasn’t long before we had arranged for Howard Stoneham to visit us and we were soon planning our first display.  18 years on we have a greater choice of displays than ever including Penshurst and Knole Stoneham ranges.   I love the mix of traditional and contemporary doors that Stoneham have to offer.

What have you got planned for your 30th?
We have a number of on-going promotions to celebrate, including 30% off our appliances which is a good draw for new customers.  The last couple of years have certainly been a tricky time in the business so we believe our free dishwasher offer will be very popular too.  We also have other promotions mapped out for later in the year.

What has been your biggest achievement over the past 30 years?
I think, starting a business in a recession, like we did, certainly builds a great backbone in the company.  And I guess I am really proud of our resilience and our growth over the years.  Having lost my business partner suddenly was a real low, but looking back its great to see how we all pulled together.  I am very proud of our family ethos which is not only reflected in our customer reviews, but also the fact that our staff have been with us for so long.  My designers have been here over 20 years and the fitters for over 15 years.  We must be doing something right!
